Bellows
Forty-two litres of air a stroke, through a handle you already know how to use.
Detail
What it is
Moves air. Nothing else, and nothing to configure. The whole interface is a handle you already know how to use.
Air is the whole of a fire's behaviour, and a pair of bellows is the shortest path between a decision about the fire and the fire changing. There is no lag between the handle moving and the coals answering, which is a property no powered blower has ever quite matched.
The boards are oak and the gusset is vegetable-tanned leather, tacked rather than glued so a worn panel can be replaced without replacing the tool. The valve is a leather flap over a hole. That is the entire mechanism.
It is quiet, which matters more than it sounds like it should: you can hear the fire, and the fire is telling you when to stop.
